How do people move around Graz's city centre, why do they shop there - and how can the quality of stay be further improved in the future? The research project "Mobility-related shopping behaviour in Graz city centre", which is being carried out in cooperation between the City of Graz, the Styrian Chamber of Commerce (WKO), the Centre for Active Mobility at the University of Graz and Graz University of Technology, is dedicated to these questions.
The study focuses on a comprehensive look at the dynamics surrounding retail, gastronomy and body-related services in the city centre. The analysis is based on several surveys that will be conducted between March and April 2025 - both on site in the city centre and online. At the same time, the Chamber of Commerce is analysing the perspectives of local entrepreneurs.
Among other things, the survey will analyse
The purchasing behaviour of visitors: How often do they come to the city centre? What motivates them to shop locally?
The mobility of customers: What means of transport do they use? What role does accessibility play in their decision?
The quality of stay: What makes Graz city centre attractive?
The perspective of businesses: What challenges and potential do entrepreneurs see in the development of the city centre?
The project aims to create a scientifically sound basis for sustainable and future-orientated urban development. The data collected will be scientifically evaluated by the Centre for Active Mobility. Initial results are expected in autumn 2025 and should serve as a basis for concrete measures for the further development of the city centre.
